New Tool Helps Protect Wadden Sea During Offshore Wind Expansion
As offshore wind development accelerates in the North Sea, new electricity cables are increasingly required to connect offshore farms to land – often crossing the ecologically sensitive Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage and Natura 2000 site. To support more sustainable planning, the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation (TWSC) has launched a guidance tool titled “Power Cables in the Wadden Sea – Physical Pressures, Environmental Impacts and Mitigation Measures.”
Developed under the LANICE project, the tool helps users understand how cable installation may affect local habitats and species. It outlines key environmental pressures, such as seabed disturbance and noise, and links them to potential impacts on wildlife and ecosystems. The tool also presents mitigation options, including careful routing, early planning, and low-impact installation techniques.
By encouraging environmentally aware decision-making, the initiative aims to ensure that expanding renewable energy infrastructure can coexist with the protection of one of Europe’s most valuable coastal ecosystems.
